Why is Annual Slip Testing Important?

Truth Slip Testing

The pendulum slip test assesses the friction offered by a floor surface when a foot comes into contact with it. It can measure slip potential of both dry, wet and contaminated flooring.

The UK law states that floors must be safe for all employees and visitors. This law in enforceable and carries heavy penalties for noncompliance with floor safety criteria. The amount of slip claims are escalating too, with lots of no win no fee companies taking on cases. Making sure you carry out regular risk assessments and carry out pendulum slip testing will support any future possible claims. The injuries people suffer vary from minor cuts, sprains and bruising that heal quickly through to bone breaks, spinal damage and head trauma that can turn people’s lives upside down.

Slips, trips and falls are still the most common accident type in the workplace and according to the Labour Force Survey in 2020/21, out of the 441,000 accidents, 33% were attributed to Slips, trips and falls. Slips and trips are the single most common cause of injury accounting for a third of all reported major injuries. 95% of those injuries involve fractures of arms, wrists and ankles.

The Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 requires employers to ensure the health and safety of all employees and anyone affected by their work, so far as is reasonably practicable, which means balancing the level of risk against the measures needed to control the risk in terms of money, time or trouble. This includes taking steps to control slip and trip risks.

We recently carried out annual pendulum slip testing at Truth Norwich, an exclusive cocktail bar and garden in the heart of Norwich’s nightlife.

At Enviro-Safe28 we use the latest equipment, and our technicians are fully trained and qualified to test to BS7976 which is the method of Operation and Calibration of the Pendulum Tester. We follow all of the procedures outlined in BS 7976 at all the sites where we carry out slip testing. BS 7976 is the preferred methodology for slip testing by The HSE and consists of using a Portable Pendulum Skid Tester. Full certification and detailed report is also provided after testing.
